Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme: Maharashtra Residential Rooftop (SMART) Solar Scheme has been introduced by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The new scheme will offer a 25 year period of free power to the residents who fall under Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
Under this Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme program, the installation of one kilowatt capacity solar rooftop power projects in eligible homes will be installed. The generated power will be linked to the state grid where the beneficiaries will have the opportunity to use electricity without experiencing recurrent expenses. Also, the surplus generated electricity can be resold to the power company under the net metering system, and it becomes a potential source of income.
Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme Subsidy
Solar installation is affordable because of the subsidies. Solar roof top project that costs approximately 60,000 to install a standard one kilowatt system is a subsidized undertaking. A 30,000 subsidy called Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana is provided by the central government. Besides this, Maharashtra state government provides an additional subsidy of 10,000 on general category consumers.
Notably, the state subsidy, which is provided to households with Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, is increased by 15,000. This tiered subsidy scheme lowers the amount that needs to be paid by beneficiaries to as low as 15000 or 10000 based on their category so that solar power investment is also an economically viable option even to low-income families.
Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme Eligibility
The Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme program is aimed at households that use a monthly electricity consumption of less than 100 units. It is focused on BPL and EWS families according to the MSEDCL chairman Lokesh Chandra, who intends to benefit five lakh families. Out of these, there are about 1.54 lakh BPL families and 3.45 lakh economically weaker consumers. The monthly usage limit is low to make sure that the scheme benefits the truly low-income groups and those who are going to be the best beneficiaries of the energy cost savings.
After receiving the applications of eligible consumers, MSEDCL gets to install the rooftop solar panels of one-kilowatt capacity in their residential units. Such panels are linked to the electricity grid, and the power produced can be used to minimize or eliminate the usage of grid electricity. The system is also equipped with the net metering technology that allows the homeowner to sell excess power to the electric company in order to receive credit or cash back on their electricity bill.
SMART Yojana First Come-First Serve Selection Process
The Maharashtra government has allocated 655 crore in order to fund this Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme. This amount is to be used to enable the provision of free electricity by installing solar panels to the specific beneficiaries aged above 25 years. The Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme is being implemented in first come first serve basis. This immediate move is an indicator of the states dedication to the sustainable energy and the social welfare by adopting renewable resources.
Other than alleviating the electricity bills, this Maharashtra Swayampurna Rooftop Scheme is in favor of the environmental goals as they reduce fossil fuel reliance and minimize pollution. It provides the poor families with the power to take part in the renewable energy process in India. MSEDCL will take charge of operation and maintenance of the project within a period of five years, which guarantees quality and system performance to the beneficiaries.
Although homesteads and households in smaller cities will find it easy to install solar panels easily, urban dwellers will experience difficulty in installing them in buildings above the ground and lack of space on the rooftop. There will be a need to create awareness and technical support to make sure that the eligible sections are benefited and overcome any infrastructural limitations.

MSEDCL will have vendors who are empanelled and those who perform site verification and install the rooftop solar systems will be approved.
The installation complies with the guidelines of the central government, to preserve standards and provide safety. The plan is consistent with the bigger objective of Maharashtra to be an energy-independent state, which encourages the use of renewable energy at the grass roots. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis underlined that this initiative will help in making underserved communities clean and economically stable to make Maharashtra a greener and sustainable state.
