The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit top-up is the part of Thursday’s federal budget that will show up in a bank account, and it is worth up to $339 for a single person without children and up to $679 for a couple with two children. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne tabled the budget on November 5, and Global News, in its list of tax changes and credits, describes the measure as a 50 per cent top-up for people who already qualify for the benefit. Finance Canada says the extra money arrives in early 2027. No exact payment date has been released, and no new application is needed if you already receive the benefit. For many households that is the difference between a tight January and a manageable one, which is why the details deserve a closer look than the headline gives them. We’ll be updating this article monthly.
That short summary leaves out the details that decide whether you plan around the money. The top-up is a one-time increase for the current benefit year, it comes on top of a smaller spring payment you may already have received, and it still needs Parliament’s approval before it becomes law. This guide explains the amounts for different households, how the total adds up across the year, what is still unknown and which other tax changes from the same budget could affect your return. It also includes a calculator that estimates your own top-up. Our research was current on November 7, 2026, and where two sources differ we show both numbers, because a wrong figure or date can lead you to plan around money that arrives later or smaller than expected. Everything here is drawn from Finance Canada pages and named news outlets.

What the Budget Changed for Groceries and Essentials Benefit Recipients
The benefit builds on the old GST/HST credit and is a quarterly payment aimed at low and modest incomes. Budget 2026 does not rebuild it. Instead, it adds a single extra amount for the 2026-27 benefit year, which runs from July 2026 to June 2027. Finance Canada’s Key Measures page calls it a one-time 50% increase delivered in early 2027.
Global News adds that the extra money is measured against the benefit you are entitled to, using your most recent tax return. In plain terms, if the CRA says you are owed a certain regular annual amount, the top-up is half of that. A person who gets little because of a higher income gets a smaller top-up. A person who gets the maximum gets the maximum top-up. That is why the government quotes “up to” figures rather than flat ones.
Groceries and Essentials Benefit Top-Up Amounts by Household
Finance Canada’s published regular amounts for 2026-27 are $679 for a single person without children and $1,358 for a couple with two children. Those totals come from the January backgrounder, which lists $543 and $1,086 as the base and adds the 25 per cent increase that started in July 2026. Half of each is the top-up, and the results match the budget’s headline numbers.
| Household | Regular maximum for 2026-27 | One-time top-up | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single, no children | $679 | $339 | $1,018 |
| Couple with two children | $1,358 | $679 | $2,037 |
The figures are maximums for people with low net income. We rounded the half of $679 down to $339, which is how the government states it. The regular amounts are our arithmetic from Finance Canada’s backgrounder, so treat them as a check rather than an official quote.
Why Some Headlines Say $1,290 and $2,570?
If you saw larger numbers in coverage, they are not wrong, but they include more than this top-up. Yahoo News Canada reports that, with earlier increases, a single person could get up to $1,290 and a couple with two children up to $2,570 across the benefit year. Those totals add three pieces: the spring one-time payment, the regular quarterly payments and the new top-up.
Finance Canada’s backgrounder put the spring payment at $267 for a single person and $533 for a couple with two children. Adding $267, $679 and $339 gives $1,285, which is within a few dollars of Yahoo’s $1,290. For the couple, $533 plus $1,358 plus $679 gives $2,570, which matches exactly. The small gap for the single person looks like rounding, but we could not confirm that, so we show both numbers.
Who Qualifies for the Grocery Benefit Top-Up?
Anyone who qualifies for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit for 2026-27 would qualify for the top-up, according to Global News. Eligibility depends on filing a tax return, having income low enough to receive a payment, being a resident of Canada for tax purposes and being at least 19, or younger with a spouse, partner or child. Those are the CRA’s general benefit rules, and the budget does not change them.
Two points matter in practice. First, you have to file. The CRA calculates the benefit from your return, so a missed filing means no payment. Second, a partner’s income counts. If you are married or common-law, the CRA uses your combined net income, and only one of you receives the benefit. The budget documents we could read do not list new income thresholds for the top-up, and Global News does not state any either.
Do You Need to Apply for the Top-Up?
No application has been announced, and none should be needed if you already receive the benefit. The CRA used the same approach for the spring payment, which went out automatically to those who qualified. Beware of anyone offering to help you apply for a fee, because the federal government does not charge for benefits.
If you have never received the benefit but think your income is low, the simplest step is to file your 2025 return, which also covers the 2026-27 benefit year. Make sure your marital status, children and address are correct in CRA My Account. An out-of-date family status is the most common reason a payment comes out smaller than expected.
When Will the Top-Up Be Paid? What We Know and Do Not Know
Finance Canada says early 2027. Global News repeats “by early 2027” and notes that specific payment dates have not been released. That is the full extent of the confirmed timeline. We found no announcement saying whether the money will arrive with the January 2027 quarterly payment, as a separate deposit or alongside the April payment.
The earlier spring payment offers a clue. Finance Canada’s backgrounder said that payment would come as early as possible in spring and no later than June, subject to Royal Assent, and it arrived in June. The new measure is also described as subject to the legislative process, so the earliest date depends on how quickly Parliament acts. We will add the date here as soon as the CRA publishes it, and the CRA benefit payment calendar is the page to trust.
Spring Payment vs Early 2027 Top-Up: Two Boosts in One Benefit Year
There is some confusion because two different one-time increases are in play. The first was announced in the winter and paid in June 2026. It was worth 50% of the old GST credit value, which is where the $267 and $533 numbers come from. The second is the budget measure and is worth 50% of the larger 2026-27 benefit, which is where $339 and $679 come from.
They stack, but they are separate. The first has already been paid to eligible people. The second is still a proposal. If your June payment was smaller than you expected, nothing in the budget changes that, and the CRA’s notice of assessment is the place to check how your income was used. Keep both amounts in mind when you plan your household budget for the winter.
How Income Reduces Your Benefit and Your Top-Up?
The benefit has three stages. It grows as income rises from a low level, holds at a maximum and then falls as family net income climbs past a threshold. In our payment schedule guide we used a reduction of 5 cents per dollar above about $46,432, and we recommend checking the CRA’s current table because the budget documents do not restate the thresholds. A person with a family income near the cut-off gets very little regular benefit, so the top-up, which is half of it, is small as well.
This matters for planning. If you are on the edge, a small change in income, such as a few hours of overtime, can change the benefit for the whole year. Because the top-up is calculated from your most recent return, the 2025 return controls what you receive in early 2027, and your 2026 return will control the next benefit year. We do not know whether the top-up will use the 2025 or 2026 return, since Global News says only “the most recent tax year”, so file early either way.
Is the Groceries and Essentials Benefit Top-Up Taxable?
The old GST/HST credit was never taxable, and the benefit that replaced it is also not taxable income. The budget does not say the top-up would be treated differently, and we did not find any statement to the contrary. Provincial programs have their own rules. If you receive social assistance, ask your caseworker how the extra payment is treated, because rules vary.
Other Tax Changes in the Global News List: What Is in Them
The grocery top-up is one of several measures Global News gathered under “key tax changes and credits”. Most are proposals, and several start later than 2026. Here is what is in the list, with the details we could confirm.
New May 15 Tax Deadline for Filing and Paying
Global News reports that May 15 would become a single deadline for filing and paying taxes owed, for most Canadians and for the self-employed. Today the balance is due April 30, and self-employed people have until June 15 to file but must still pay by April 30. The government estimates $230 million in interest and penalty savings over five years.
There is one point where sources are not fully aligned. Global News says the change starts with the upcoming tax year, while the budget’s tax annex, which we read for our main budget guide, points to the 2027 tax year. Until the CRA clarifies, treat April 30, 2027 as the due date for your 2026 return. Paying late costs interest, and missing that date by relying on a proposal would be an expensive mistake.
Longer Window to File a Notice of Objection
The window to object to a CRA assessment would stretch from 90 days to one year, according to Global News. The change is practical for people who find an error late, such as a missed credit or a wrong deduction. We did not find the start date, and Finance Canada’s Key Measures page does not mention it, so we cannot say whether it applies to assessments already issued.
Higher Instalment Threshold Proposed for 2028
Global News reports that the threshold at which people must pay tax instalments would rise from $3,000 to $7,500 and be indexed to inflation, starting in 2028. The article gives an example of someone who owes $12,000 a year and now pays $3,000 each quarter, who could instead pay in two instalments. Self-employed people could make one payment of two-thirds of their net tax by year-end.
Seniors with Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan or RRIF income would more often fall under the threshold. This is a proposal, so it has no effect on your 2026 or 2027 instalments. It is a useful reminder that CRA payment reminders are based on current rules.
Flat-Rate Deductions Without Receipts
Several new optional flat amounts would let you skip receipts. You can still itemize if your real costs are higher.
| Measure | Flat amount, per Global News |
|---|---|
| Relocation or work travel | $1,000 |
| Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople | $1,500 |
| Home Accessibility Tax Credit | $1,000 |
| Adoption | $1,200 per child |
| Service dog care and maintenance | $2,000 |
| Incontinence products for medical purposes | $500 |
| Gluten-free food for celiac disease | $1,000 |
| Clergy housing expenses | $1,000 |
If you have large expenses, compare the flat figure against your records before choosing. A tradesperson who drives hundreds of kilometres a week may be better off with actual receipts.
Build Canada Workers Benefit: Lower Entry Point and Higher Maximums
Yahoo News Canada reports that the Canada Workers Benefit would start at $500 of earnings instead of $3,000. Maximum credits would rise to $1,859 for single people without kids and $3,143 for families. That answers a question that we flagged in our main budget guide: the $3,143 figure is the family maximum, not the single maximum. Finance Canada’s Key Measures page, which we read, names the Build Canada Workers Benefit and says it would lift about 240,000 people out of poverty, but it does not give dollar amounts. The dollar figures here rely on Yahoo’s reporting.
Refundable Canada Caregiver Credit
The caregiver credit would become refundable, with up to $1,260 a year, for about 180,000 people who do not currently get it, according to Yahoo News Canada. Being refundable means you could receive money even if you owe no tax. The detailed claim amounts are in our main budget guide.
Fuel Excise Tax Relief Extended
Yahoo reports that the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax, worth about 10 cents a litre, would be extended to the end of January 2027. The tax would then return at 50% until the end of March 2027. The budget sets aside $5.3 billion for this relief. If you drive a lot, expect pump prices to move in February and again in April, though the retail price also depends on crude oil and refining costs.
Canada Housing Benefit and Other Household Items
The Canada Housing Benefit would be renewed for 10 years, with $1.7 billion in monthly rental assistance starting in 2028-29, per Yahoo. National museums would be free for people under 25. The Canada Strong Pass would return for another summer, with discounted access to Indigenous-led museums and cultural centres added. The RRSP-for-life proposal, which would end the forced RRSP-to-RRIF conversion at 71, is still only a consultation.
Business Measures in the Budget
Global News also lists two business measures. The Productivity Mega Deduction would let businesses of all sizes permanently deduct the full cost of eligible capital assets in the year of purchase. The Canada Growth Incentive would exempt up to $15 million in capital gains, and founders could roll over profits from a sold business if they reinvest in another Canadian business. These do not affect most households directly, but they explain where much of the budget’s cost sits.
Is the Grocery Benefit Top-Up Guaranteed? What Needs to Pass
No. A budget is a plan, and the benefit changes require legislation. Poilievre’s Conservatives have said they will vote against the budget, according to the Canadian Press. We did not find a vote date or a vote count, so we cannot predict the outcome. A second important point is that the earlier spring payment also depended on Royal Assent, which is a reason to treat the date as a target.
If you are budgeting around the money, a simple approach is to plan as if the top-up may arrive in February or March, and not to count on it for a bill due in January. Treat it as a bonus, not a certainty, until the CRA confirms.
Groceries and Essentials Benefit Top-Up Calculator
Use the calculator below to estimate your own regular benefit and top-up for 2026-27. Choose your household type, enter your family net income and the number of children. It applies the regular maximums of $445 for each adult and $234 for each child, plus the single supplement, and then reduces the total by 5 cents per dollar above $46,432. The top-up is half of that result. It is an estimate based on our reading of the rules, not an official CRA figure.

How to Get the Grocery Benefit Top-Up: Step by Step
There is no separate form, so the steps are about making sure the CRA has what it needs.
- File your 2025 tax return, even if you had no income.
- Sign in to CRA My Account and confirm your marital status, children and address.
- Set up direct deposit, which is faster than a cheque.
- Add your spouse or common-law partner's information if you share a household.
- Check the CRA benefit payment dates page for the date once it is published.
- Watch your My Account notifications and mail for a benefit notice.
Groceries and Essentials Benefit Top-Up Processing Time
Because the payment is automatic, there is no processing time in the usual sense. The CRA calculates it from your return. If you file late, or if your return is under review, the payment can be delayed until the return is assessed. Electronic filing is usually assessed faster than paper, and the CRA often posts its normal turnaround on its service standards page. If you filed on time and your return is assessed, you should not need to do anything else.
Payment Schedule for the Benefit in 2026-27
The regular payments arrive on the CRA's quarterly schedule in July, October, January and April. The July and October 2026 payments have already gone out. The January and April 2027 dates should be taken from the CRA's official calendar, because we saw conflicting reports about the exact January date. The one-time top-up has no date yet and is described only as early 2027.
If a payment does not arrive within five business days of the scheduled date, check your direct deposit details first. After that, you can call the CRA. Do not give anyone your banking information by text or email.
Scam Warning: The CRA Will Not Ask You to Pay to Receive a Benefit
Benefit announcements are followed by scam texts and calls. The CRA does not ask for a fee to release a benefit, does not demand payment by gift card or cryptocurrency and does not send text messages with links asking for your banking details. If you get a message offering your top-up in exchange for a payment or a click, delete it and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. When in doubt, sign in to CRA My Account yourself, by typing the address, and see whether a notice is there.
What Is Still Unconfirmed About the Top-Up
A number of details are missing. The payment date is not set. The income cut-offs for the top-up are not published in the pages we could read. We do not know whether it arrives with the January payment. We rely on the Global News article, Yahoo News Canada and Finance Canada's own pages, and we did not use outlets whose pages we could not open. The $1,290 total cited by Yahoo differs slightly from our $1,285 arithmetic. Finally, the start year of the May 15 deadline is described differently by two sources.
