2027 Social Security COLA Calculator: Estimate Your New Monthly Check Before the Oct. 14 Announcement

2027 Social Security COLA Calculator: The Social Security Administration will announce the official cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, 2026, the same day the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September inflation data. Two of the three monthly readings that decide the number are already in. August’s CPI-W came in at 328.481 on September 11, which sits 3.5% above last year’s third-quarter baseline. The Senior Citizens League now projects a 3.5% COLA, AARP is at 3.6%, and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is at 3.4%. Any of those would beat this year’s 2.8% and would be the largest increase since 2023. We’ll be updating this article monthly as new inflation data and Social Security Administration announcements arrive.

Here is why the calculator works the way it does. Social Security does not use the headline inflation rate you hear on the evening news. It uses the CPI-W, the price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, and it averages July, August and September before comparing that average with the same three months a year earlier. Last year’s average was 317.265. July 2026 came in at 327.104 and August at 328.481, so September is the swing month. If September simply matches August, the math lands at 3.4%. If prices rise roughly 0.2% or more from August, 3.5% comes into play, and a jump near 0.5% would push it to 3.6%. Energy is the wild card, with diesel topping $6 a gallon in the second week of September, a record, according to CBS News. At 3.4%, the average retired worker would gain about $70 a month.

Enter your current gross monthly benefit, meaning the amount before Medicare premiums are taken out. You will find it on your latest benefit letter or inside your my Social Security account. Pick a COLA scenario, or switch to the second mode and type in a guess for September's CPI-W index, and the tool applies the same formula the agency uses. It also subtracts an estimated Part B increase so you can see a more realistic take-home raise. This is an estimator, not an official calculation, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

The table shows what common benefit levels would become under four plausible outcomes. Each result is rounded down to the whole dollar, which is how the agency generally treats benefit amounts, so your own notice may differ by a dollar or so.

2027 Social Security COLA Forecast: Latest Estimates and Key Dates

Nobody outside the Bureau of Labor Statistics knows September's number yet, so every 2027 COLA figure you see today is a projection. The forecasts have narrowed since spring, though. In May, the Senior Citizens League was projecting 3.9% after a hot inflation report. By mid-August it had cooled to 3.6%, and after the August data it settled at 3.5%. AARP moved the other way, nudging its estimate up from 3.5% to 3.6%.

How the Social Security COLA Is Calculated: The CPI-W Formula Explained

Federal law ties the annual raise to the CPI-W. The agency averages the index for July, August and September, compares it with the same three months in the last year a COLA was set, and rounds the increase to the nearest tenth of a percent. If the result rounds to zero, there is no COLA, but benefits never go down.

Last year's calculation shows how it works. The third-quarter 2024 average was 308.729 and the third-quarter 2025 average was 317.265. The difference, divided by the older figure, was 2.76%, which rounded to 2.8%. That 317.265 is now the starting line for 2027.

Month2025 CPI-W2026 CPI-W
July316.349327.104
August317.306328.481
September318.139Due October 14
Third-quarter average317.265Pending

The annual inflation rate in the news is not the COLA. The CPI-W rose 3.5% over the twelve months through August, but the COLA uses a three-month average that also includes July's 3.4% reading. The final number is a blend, and it can differ from any single month's headline.

September CPI-W Scenarios: Which Number Locks In Each COLA?

This is the part most forecasts skip. Since July and August are known, we can work backward and show the September CPI-W range that produces each possible COLA. We ran the agency's own rounding sequence to build the table.

Resulting 2027 COLASeptember 2026 CPI-W neededChange from August 2026
3.2%326.191 to 327.144Down 0.70% to down 0.41%
3.3%327.145 to 328.095Down 0.41% to down 0.12%

3.6%329.998 to 330.951Up 0.46% to up 0.75%
3.7%330.952 to 331.902Up 0.75% to up 1.04%

A flat September lands squarely in the 3.4% band. To reach the 3.5% the Senior Citizens League projects, prices have to climb by a little under 0.2% in one month, which is plausible while fuel prices are rising. To reach AARP's 3.6%, the index needs to rise by nearly half a percent. These ranges are our own calculation from published CPI-W figures, not an official Social Security Administration table.

How Much Will My Social Security Increase in 2027?

Averages help set expectations, although your own check depends on your earnings record and when you claimed. The table applies a 3.5% COLA to the January 2026 averages published in the agency's 2026 fact sheet. Actual averages have since drifted higher, with recent reports putting the average retired worker near $2,084, so treat these as illustrations.

Beneficiary groupJanuary 2026 averageIllustrative 2027 average at 3.5%Monthly increase
All retired workers$2,071$2,143+$72
Aged couple, both receiving benefits$3,208$3,320+$112
Aged widow(er) alone$1,919$1,986+$67
All disabled workers$1,630$1,687+$57

For the average retired worker, 3.5% works out to roughly $864 more over twelve months before deductions. That is real money, but it explains why many seniors feel let down. The Senior Citizens League found in a June survey that 89% of respondents said this year's 2.8% raise left them behind inflation, and 2026 inflation has run above 2.8% in every month except January and February, according to CBS News.

Medicare Part B and Your Real Raise: What Comes Out of the Check

Most retirees do not see the full gross raise. The standard Medicare Part B premium is deducted from Social Security for most enrollees. It is $202.90 in 2026, and the 2026 Medicare Trustees Report projects $209.50 for 2027, an increase of about $6.60. Some private analysts expect $215 to $219 because the Trustees have underestimated in recent years, so treat the figure as a planning estimate. CMS usually confirms the official premium in November.

Current monthly benefitGross raise at 3.5%Part B increase (projected)Estimated net raise
$1,500+$52$6.60+$45.40
$2,071+$72$6.60+$65.40
$3,000+$105$6.60+$98.40

A hold-harmless rule generally keeps the Part B increase from exceeding your COLA dollar increase if premiums already come out of your check. New enrollees and higher earners who pay income-related surcharges are excluded. Those surcharges, known as IRMAA, rely on your tax return from two years earlier, which means 2025 income for 2027.

2027 Social Security COLA Payment Schedule: When the Higher Check Arrives

The COLA applies to December 2026 benefits, which are paid in January 2027. Your birth date decides your payment day: the second Wednesday if you were born from the 1st to the 10th, the third Wednesday for the 11th to the 20th, and the fourth Wednesday for the 21st to the 31st. People who started before May 1997, and people who also receive SSI, are typically paid on the 3rd.

MonthBorn 1st to 10thBorn 11th to 20thBorn 21st to 31stPaid on the 3rdSSI
October 2026Oct. 14Oct. 21Oct. 28Oct. 2Oct. 1 and Oct. 30
November 2026Nov. 10Nov. 18Nov. 25Nov. 3None (paid Oct. 30)
December 2026Dec. 9Dec. 16Dec. 23Dec. 3Dec. 1 and Dec. 31
January 2027 (first COLA payment)Jan. 13Jan. 20Jan. 27Dec. 31, 2026Paid Dec. 31, 2026

Three quirks are worth flagging. The first November payment moves to Tuesday, November 10, because Veterans Day falls on the 11th. SSI recipients get two deposits in October and none in November, a calendar effect and not a mistake. And the group paid on the 3rd sees its January payment on Thursday, December 31, because January 1 is a holiday and January 3 is a Sunday. The agency treats that as the January payment, so the higher amount should arrive with it. The January Wednesday dates follow the standard rule; confirm them against the official 2027 calendar once it is published.

How to Apply for Social Security and Receive the COLA Automatically

You do not apply for a COLA. It is added to existing benefits automatically. What you can do is make sure your account and details are ready.

  1. If you already receive benefits, do nothing to trigger the raise. Retirement, disability, survivor and SSI payments all adjust on their own.
  2. Create or sign in to your personal my Social Security account to read your COLA notice, check payment history and update your address or direct deposit. The agency said last year that you needed an account by mid-November to see the notice online.
  3. Turn on text or email alerts so you know when a message arrives. About 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically, and direct deposit is the fastest and safest route.
  4. If you have not started benefits, apply online, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at a local office. Retirement benefits can start as early as 62, and the agency advises applying about four months before you want them to begin.
  5. Watch for scams. Report suspicious contact through the official fraud reporting page.

COLA Processing Time: When You Will Learn Your Exact New Amount

There is no processing time for the COLA itself, because it is automatic. What varies is when you learn your exact number, since the final amount depends on the Medicare premium deducted from your check. Last year, online notices began appearing in mid-November for some account holders, with all available by December 12. Paper notices were mailed throughout December, and the agency asked people to wait until January before calling about a missing letter. Expect a similar rhythm this year, although the official schedule has not been published.

For new retirement or disability claims, processing time varies with document completeness and workload, and the agency does not guarantee a fixed number of days. Applying early with your documents ready is the best way to avoid delays, and you can view a pending claim's status in your online account.

Social Security Numbers That Change Every January

The October 14 announcement brings more than the COLA. The agency also publishes the new taxable maximum, the earnings limits for people who work while collecting, and the disability thresholds. These are the 2026 values, verified against the agency's fact sheet, with early 2027 signals where they exist.

SSI and SSDI: Who Gets the 2027 COLA?

Everyone receiving Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits gets the same percentage, and SSI recipients get it too, on a different timeline. The SSI increase shows up in the payment sent December 31, 2026. At 3.4%, the federal SSI rate would rise from $994 to about $1,028 for an individual and from $1,491 to about $1,542 for a couple. At 3.5%, those estimates become roughly $1,029 and $1,543.

People who receive both programs will see both amounts change, and the SSI portion can shift if the higher Social Security check counts as additional income, so read the December letter carefully. The SSI resource limits of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple do not rise with the COLA.

Trust Fund Outlook: Why a Bigger COLA Is Both Welcome and Costly

The 2026 Trustees Report, released June 9, projects that the retirement trust fund will be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032, when about 78% of scheduled benefits would be payable. If Congress combined the retirement and disability funds, reserves would last until the third quarter of 2034, with 83% payable afterward. None of this changes the January COLA, which is set by formula, and benefits are being paid in full today.

FAQs About the 2027 Social Security COLA

When will the 2027 Social Security COLA be announced?

The Social Security Administration is expected to announce it on October 14, 2026, the same day the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September CPI report, which supplies the last of the three monthly readings in the formula.

How much will Social Security increase in 2027?

No official number exists yet. The Senior Citizens League projects 3.5%, AARP projects 3.6%, and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projects 3.4%. For an average retired worker at $2,071 a month, that means about $70 to $74 more before Medicare deductions.

Is the 2027 COLA guaranteed to be 3.5%?

No. September's inflation reading can still move the result. A flat September gives 3.4%, a rise of roughly 0.2% to 0.5% gives 3.5%, and anything larger gives 3.6% or more.

When will the 2027 COLA show up in my check?

For most people, in the payment made in January 2027, which covers December 2026 benefits. Wednesday payments arrive January 13, 20 or 27 depending on birth date. SSI recipients receive the higher amount on December 31, 2026.

Do I have to apply to get the COLA?

No. The increase is automatic for anyone already receiving benefits. Keep your address and direct deposit details current and read your notice in your online account.

Will Medicare Part B take my raise?

The projected 2027 premium is $209.50, up about $6.60 from $202.90. A hold-harmless rule protects many current enrollees, but new enrollees and high earners are not covered.

Can the COLA be zero?

In principle, yes. If the CPI-W average does not rise above the baseline, there is no COLA, as happened in 2010, 2011 and 2016. Benefits do not decrease when that happens, and a zero COLA is not a realistic risk this year.

How is the Social Security COLA calculated?

The agency averages the CPI-W for July, August and September, compares it with the same three months from the last year a COLA was set, and rounds to the nearest tenth of a percent. For 2027, the baseline is 317.265.

Will Social Security increase in January 2027?

Very likely. It would take a sharp price decline that no forecaster expects to prevent a COLA. Most beneficiaries will see the higher amount in their January payment, and SSI recipients on December 31.

Why is my Social Security check smaller than expected after the COLA?

Usually because of deductions. Medicare Part B premiums, Part D surcharges, voluntary tax withholding and overpayment recovery can all reduce the deposit. Your COLA notice lists each one, so compare it with your previous letter.

What is the maximum Social Security benefit in 2026?

For a worker retiring at full retirement age in 2026, it is $4,152 a month. Delaying to age 70 can reach a higher figure, which one benefits guide puts near $5,181.

Is my Social Security COLA taxable?

The COLA is part of your benefit, so it can raise the portion counted toward federal tax if your combined income is above the thresholds. Those thresholds are not indexed to inflation, so a bigger COLA can push more retirees over the line over time.

Does SSDI get the same COLA as retirement benefits?

Yes. Disability, survivor and retirement benefits get the same percentage, and SSI receives it as well.

Conclusion

The picture for the 2027 Social Security COLA is clearer than it has been all year. With July and August locked in, the increase is likely to land between 3.4% and 3.6%, and a flat September would produce 3.4%. That would be the biggest raise since 2023 and a step up from 2026's 2.8%. The official number arrives on October 14, and the first higher payments show up on December 31 for SSI recipients and January 13, 20 and 27 for most other beneficiaries.

Use the calculator to plan around a range instead of a single guess, and remember that the Medicare premium will trim the gross raise. Create your my Social Security account now so you can read your notice the moment it appears, and use only the official links above when you sign in. We will refresh this article after October 14, when the official COLA, the new taxable maximum and the confirmed Medicare premium can replace today's estimates.
