Australia’s Utilities Allowance 2026: Search results and viral posts keep promoting a “$795 Utilities Allowance.” That figure does not match what Services Australia currently pays. The official rate was indexed on 20 September 2026, and this guide gives the verified numbers, the remaining payment dates and who actually gets the payment.

What Is the Utilities Allowance?
The Utilities Allowance is a quarterly payment that helps with household bills such as electricity, gas and water. It has existed since March 2005. Services Australia pays it together with your regular payment, so there is no separate application.
Three features make it simple:
- it is not taxable: you do not pay tax on it.
- No means test of its own: it is not separately income or assets tested.
- Automatic: if you get a qualifying payment, it is added for you.
The $795 Claim vs. the Official Figure
Many sites claim a fixed “$795 per year, paid as four instalments of $198.75.” The official rates tell a different story, because the allowance is indexed twice a year:
| Period | Official Single Rate (per quarter) | Annual Equivalent |
| March 2025 (Services Australia guide) | $195.70 | $782.80 |
| March to September 2026 | $202.60 | $810.40 |
| From 20 September 2026 (DSS rates list) | $206.70 | $826.80 |
Current Amounts (From 20 September 2026)
| Single | Couple |
| $206.70 (per quarter) | $103.35 (each) |
Payment Dates
Services Australia pays the allowance on or after 20 March, 20 June, 20 September and 20 December each year.
| Quarter | Payment Date | Status |
| March | 20 March 2026 | Paid |
| June | 20 June 2026 | Paid |
| September | 20 September 2026 | Past (new rate $206.70) |
| December | 20 December 2026 | Next payment |
| March | 20 March 2027 | Next rate adjustment |
“On or after” means the money arrives with your regular fortnightly payment, so the exact deposit day depends on your payment cycle. When the 20th falls on a weekend, as it does in December 2026, so expect the payment on your first payday after that date.
Who Is Covered?
This is where most online articles go wrong. The Utilities Allowance is not paid to every Centrelink customer, and it is not a separate extra for most pensioners.
- Disability Support Pension recipients under 21 with no dependent children. Since 1 January 2022 only this group gets the allowance as a separate payment. Services Australia assesses you for it when you claim Disability Support Pension (DSP), so there is nothing extra to apply for.
- Most pensioners already have it built in. For most pensioners and other income support recipients who have reached Age Pension age, the value of the Utilities Allowance was added into the Pension Supplement or forms part of the transitional rate. This is why Age Pension, Carer Payment and DSP recipients aged 21 and over do not see a separate quarterly line item. A payment that attracts the Pension Supplement does not also pay a separate Utilities Allowance.
- Residency rules apply. You must be in Australia on the test day, or temporarily absent with the test day falling within the first 6 weeks of that absence. It cannot be paid once you have permanently left Australia.
- You can decline it. Tell Services Australia if you do not want it. You can reverse that later, but only future instalments are paid, with no arrears for the period you declined.
Utilities Allowance vs. Energy Supplement
People often mix these up:
| Feature | Utilities Allowance | Energy Supplement |
| Who gets it | DSP recipients under 21 with no dependent children | People on qualifying payments, such as Age Pension, DSP, Carer Payment and JobSeeker |
| Amount from 20 September 2026 | $206.70 per quarter (single) | Age Pension: $14.10 per fortnight (single), $10.60 each (partnered). JobSeeker, single, no children: $8.80 per fortnight |
| Paid | Quarterly, on the test days | Fortnightly by default; you can choose quarterly |
| Application needed | No | No |
For Age Pension recipients the Energy Supplement is a separate component of the fortnightly payment, while the Utilities Allowance value sits inside the Pension Supplement.
Related Changes From 20 September 2026
- Indexation: pensions, allowances and Rent Assistance are indexed on 20 March and 20 September. The next change is 20 March 2027. Age Pension, Carer Payment and DSP rose by $36.80 a fortnight for singles and $55.60 for couples combined, per Services Australia.
- Deeming rates: raised from 1.25% to 1.75% on financial assets up to $66,800 (single) and $110,600 (couples combined), and from 3.25% to 3.75% above those thresholds. The thresholds have not changed since 1 July 2026.
- Other date: Carer Allowance and student payments are indexed on 1 January.
Higher deeming rates can lower pension entitlements for people with savings, so it is worth reviewing your finances.
How to Check Your Payment?
- Log in to myGov linked to Centrelink and check your payment summary.

- Look at your payment type. If you get DSP under 21, look for the quarterly Utilities Allowance line. If you get the Age Pension, check your Pension Supplement rather than expecting a separate line.
- Update your details promptly, including address, income, relationship status and overseas travel.
- Contact Services Australia if you think you should be getting it, or if a payment is missing.
