Social Security Payments October 14: Who gets checks as 2027 COLA forecast hits 3.6%?

Social Security Payments October 14: Millions of Social Security beneficiaries with birthdays on the 1st through the 10th of the month will see a deposit land on Wednesday, October 14, the second Wednesday of the month. The same morning, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release September inflation numbers that lock in the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment. AARP and Kiplinger both project 3.6 percent, which AARP says would lift the average retired worker’s check by about $75 a month from roughly $2,086 today. The Senior Citizens League is a notch lower at 3.5 percent. Nothing changes in your account on Wednesday, because the raise first shows up in January payments, but the Social Security payment schedule this month is unusually busy, with extra SSI timing and a few dates that shift. We’ll be updating this article monthly.

The numbers behind the headlines are large. The Social Security Administration counted about 75.9 million people receiving Social Security, SSI or both as of August 2026, including 2.5 million who get both. The average retired worker collects $2,087.52 a month, and the average disabled worker $1,635.90, according to SSA’s monthly snapshot. Paper checks are now rare. About 195,000 people, roughly 0.3 percent of beneficiaries, still received them as of September, according to AARP. Below you will find who is paid when, how November and December shake out, what the 3.6 percent forecast means in dollars, and a calculator that finds your own payment dates.

Who Gets a Social Security Check on October 14, 2026?

Your payment date depends on when you started benefits and your birthday. People who began collecting after May 1, 1997 are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month. For retirement and disability benefits, the date follows your own birthday. For spouse, survivor and other auxiliary benefits, it follows the birthday of the worker whose earnings record the benefit is based on. The staggered system began in June 1997, and before then everyone was paid on the third.

Why SSI Recipients Get Two Payments in October

November 1, 2026 falls on a Sunday, and federal payments do not go out on weekends. SSA therefore moves the November SSI payment to Friday, October 30. That means SSI recipients receive two deposits in October, on October 1 and October 30, and none in November. The next regular SSI date is Tuesday, December 1. People who get both SSI and Social Security still follow the same logic, with SSI on the first (or earlier when the first falls on a weekend or holiday) and Social Security on the third or a Wednesday depending on when they started.

The practical lesson is to budget across two months. If you rely on SSI, treat the October 30 deposit as your November money and plan rent and utilities around it, because there is no deposit to look for in early November.

Social Security Payment Dates for November, December and January

SSA’s published calendar is the final word, and we could not open the PDF while writing, so the dates below are our own calculation from the standard rules. They apply the preceding business day rule when a payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday. Please confirm yours with the SSA calendar or your online account.

Payment groupNovember 2026December 2026January 2027

Birthdays 11 to 20Wednesday, November 18Wednesday, December 16Wednesday, January 20
Birthdays 21 to 31Wednesday, November 25Wednesday, December 23Wednesday, January 27

Two dates deserve a flag. The second Wednesday of November is November 11, which is Veterans Day and a federal holiday, so the first Wednesday group should be paid the day before, on Tuesday, November 10. January 1, 2027 is a Friday holiday, which pushes the January SSI payment and the January 3 payment for the third-of-the-month group back to the end of December. These are expected outcomes based on the rules, not quotes from SSA.

Social Security Payment Date Calculator: Find Your Next Deposits

The calculator below finds your payment dates from October 2026 through January 2027. Choose your benefit type, enter the relevant birthday and it lists each deposit, adjusts for weekends and federal holidays and marks the next one. It runs in your browser, stores nothing and follows the same calculation we used above, so treat the result as an estimate and verify it against your SSA account.

Estimate based on SSA’s published rules: payments move to the preceding business day when a date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, and SSI is paid early when the next month starts on a weekend or holiday. The official SSA payment calendar and your my Social Security account are the final word. The January 2027 payment includes the 2027 COLA once SSA announces it.

How the Social Security Payment Schedule Works, Step by Step

The Social Security payment schedule follows three simple questions. First, did you start benefits before May 1997, or do you also receive SSI, live abroad or have a state paying your Medicare premiums? If yes, your Social Security payment arrives on the 3rd of the month. Second, if not, which day of the month were you born, or which day was the worker born if you receive a spouse or survivor benefit? Birthdays from the 1st to the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th to the 20th on the third Wednesday and the 21st to the 31st on the fourth Wednesday. Third, does the date fall on a weekend or a federal holiday? If so, the payment arrives on the business day before. Once you know your group, your Social Security payment dates are easy to predict for the whole year, and the calculator above does the weekend and holiday math for you.

Social Security Payment Schedule Mistakes to Avoid

A few errors cause most of the missed-payment calls to SSA. Do not use your own birthday when the benefit is based on a spouse or parent’s record, because the earner’s birthday sets the date. Do not assume the first Wednesday is a payment day, since Social Security payments for newer beneficiaries start on the second Wednesday. Do not budget a November SSI deposit this year, because it arrives on October 30. And do not wait for a paper check to correct a bank change, since direct deposit details can be updated much faster through your online account.

What to Do if Your Social Security Payment Does Not Arrive

Start with your bank. Direct deposits can take a short time to post, and a bank can tell you whether a payment is pending. If your bank has nothing, check your payment status in your my Social Security account. If the money is still missing after your scheduled date, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or the TTY line at 1-800-325-0778, or visit a local office. SSA says it will replace a payment that was due and not received, so do not accept a vague explanation. Keep a note of the date, the person you spoke to and any reference number.

Also check for a recent change. A new bank account, a switched debit card or a change in your name or address can interrupt a deposit. Update your information with SSA first and then with your bank.

Direct Deposit, Direct Express and Paper Checks: What Changed

SSA stopped mailing checks to most beneficiaries years ago, and nearly everyone now gets paid electronically, usually by direct deposit or on a Direct Express debit card. About 195,000 people, around 0.3 percent of beneficiaries, were still receiving paper checks as of September 2026, according to AARP. A March 2025 executive order directs federal agencies to phase out paper payments, and SSA is encouraging remaining check recipients to switch.

SSA can grant a paper payment waiver only in narrow cases, such as when someone has no access to banking or the internet or has a severe impairment that makes electronic payment difficult. Waiver requests go to 855-290-1545. If you still get a check, switch through your bank, a my Social Security account or SSA’s phone line before the next payment, and give the bank both the routing and account number carefully, because a wrong digit can delay a deposit for weeks.

2027 COLA Forecast at 3.6 Percent: What It Means for Your Check

The forecast has moved around all summer, and the movement is part of the story. In mid-August, AARP had 3.5 percent, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget had 3.2 percent and The Senior Citizens League was at 3.6 percent, according to a FOX Local roundup. By September 11, AARP had moved up to 3.6 percent, and the Senior Citizens League had trimmed its call to 3.5 percent. Kiplinger’s David Payne is at 3.6 percent as well.

ForecasterEstimateDate or note
AARP3.6 percentUpdated September 11, up from 3.5 percent in August
Kiplinger (David Payne)3.6 percentFinal estimate before the release
The Senior Citizens League3.5 percentTrimmed from 3.6 percent
Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget3.2 percentAugust estimate

The official figure is set by the average of the CPI-W for July, August and September compared with the same months a year earlier, and AARP’s math uses actual data through August plus a Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland projection for September. AARP says wage-earner prices rose 3.5 percent in August from a year earlier. Here is what 3.6 percent would mean for typical beneficiaries, using AARP’s current averages.

Beneficiary typeAverage benefit nowEstimated monthly increase at 3.6%
Retired workerabout $2,086about $75
Surviving spouse$1,933about $70
Disabled worker$1,635about $59

For a quick check on your own number, multiply your current benefit by 0.036. A $1,800 benefit would rise by about $65, and a $2,500 benefit by about $90, before Medicare premiums. For a larger set of dollar examples and the Medicare Part B offset, see our earlier explainer on the announcement itself.

When Does the 2027 COLA Show Up in Social Security Payments?

Wednesday’s announcement is only the first step. SSA mails COLA notices in December, and the higher amount appears in payments received starting in January 2027. Because of the rule that benefits are paid the month after they are earned, the January deposit reflects December’s benefit. SSI works a little differently. SSI recipients typically see their new amount with the payment for January, which in 2027 is expected to arrive on Thursday, December 31 because January 1 is a holiday. That is our reading of the rules, so confirm it on SSA’s notice.

What Would a 3.6 Percent COLA Mean for SSI?

The federal SSI maximum for an individual is $994 a month in 2026. Applying a 3.6 percent increase gives about $1,030, and a 3.5 percent increase gives about $1,029, by our arithmetic and subject to SSA’s rounding. These are not official numbers. One widely read summary of SSI timing puts the average SSI payment near $740 a month across roughly 7 million recipients, but it does not cite a source, so we are not relying on it. SSA’s own snapshot shows 4.8 million people receive only SSI and 2.5 million receive both SSI and Social Security.

Social Security by the Numbers: Who Is Paid and How Much

Measure (August 2026)Figure
Total people paid Social Security, SSI or both75.88 million
Social Security only68.57 million
SSI only4.79 million
Both Social Security and SSI2.52 million
Average retired worker benefit$2,087.52
Average disabled worker benefit$1,635.90
Total monthly Social Security benefitsabout $138.8 billion

These numbers show why a small percentage change matters. Every 0.1 point of COLA is worth roughly $2 a month to the average retiree, and across the whole program it moves billions of dollars a year.

Medicare Part B and Your Deposit

Part B is usually deducted before you see the money, so your deposit can rise by less than your COLA. The 2026 standard premium is $202.90, and the Medicare Trustees project $209.50 for 2027. CMS has not confirmed the 2027 premium. A hold harmless rule generally prevents a Part B increase from reducing your Social Security check, but it does not guarantee your raise will be as large as your COLA. Medicare open enrollment begins October 15, so it is also a good week to review your plan.

How to Apply for Social Security Benefits and Check Your Status

You can apply for retirement, disability or survivor benefits online, by phone or at a local office. Gather your Social Security number, birth certificate, recent tax or earnings records and bank details for direct deposit. Applying for retirement benefits can be done several months before you want payments to begin, and your claim is reviewed before payments are scheduled. Processing time varies by claim type. Retirement claims are often faster, and disability decisions can take months. Your my Social Security account shows status updates and lets you review your benefit amount and your payment history.

The first payment for a month of eligibility arrives the following month, on the date tied to your birthday. If you start in an unusual month, expect your first deposit to land on one of the Wednesday dates in the tables above, or on the third if you fall under that group.

Social Security Scams to Watch This Week

Big news days bring impersonators. SSA will not threaten you with arrest or suspension of your Social Security number, ask for payment by gift card, cash or cryptocurrency, or demand your bank information on an unexpected call. If someone contacts you claiming your payment is on hold, hang up and contact SSA through the number on its official site. Never share your account password or one-time codes.

FAQs About the Social Security Payment Schedule

Who gets Social Security on October 14, 2026?

People who started benefits after May 1997 and have birthdays on the 1st through the 10th get paid on the second Wednesday, which is October 14. For spouse or survivor benefits, the worker’s birthday is what counts.

When do SSI payments arrive in October 2026?

SSI is paid on Thursday, October 1, and again on Friday, October 30, because November 1 falls on a Sunday.

Why is there no SSI payment in November 2026?

The November payment was moved up to October 30, so there is no separate November deposit. The next one is December 1.

What day is Social Security paid if I started before May 1997?

You are paid on the 3rd of the month, or the preceding business day when the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday. In October, that date is Friday, October 2.

When will the 2027 COLA be announced?

SSA is expected to announce it on October 14, after BLS releases September CPI at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

When will the COLA appear in my payments?

You will get a notice in December and the higher amount in payments starting in January 2027.

What if my payment date falls on a holiday?

Payment is made on the preceding business day.

How do I switch from paper checks to direct deposit?

Contact your bank or SSA, or use your my Social Security account, and have your routing and account numbers ready.

Conclusion

The October 14 deposit is a routine payment for people with early-month birthdays, but this week it also sits in front of the biggest piece of Social Security news of the year. Whether the official COLA lands at 3.5 percent or 3.6 percent, the raise will not reach your account until January, and Part B will take a bite before you see it. In the meantime, check your date, watch for the shifted deposits at the end of October, in November and at year-end, and make sure your bank information is current. Review your Medicare choices before December 7, and be wary of anyone who calls to say your payment is in trouble. We will update this guide when SSA publishes the official COLA and the next payment calendar.
