The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is a monthly payment (tax free) of 2026 (payments are done in 2026 based on 2025 tax returns) to assist in energy/property expenses. Ontario is one of the premium provinces in Canada where the cost of living is very high and the government is charging huge tax from citizens in the location. How to Apply for the OTB 2026: Form ON-BEN

The OTB application process is embedded directly within the annual income tax filing. You do NOT submit a separate application to the CRA for the OTB. Instead:

Step 1 — File your 2025 income tax return with the CRA. This is mandatory — the CRA cannot assess your OTB eligibility without a filed return.

Step 2 — Complete Form ON-BEN — the “Application for the 2026 Ontario Trillium Benefit and Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant.” This form is included in the provincial tax package for Ontario residents and must be completed alongside your federal return.

Step 3 — Claim the applicable credits on Form ON-BEN by entering your:

  • 2025 rent paid (for OEPTC)
  • 2025 property tax paid (for OEPTC)
  • Location within Ontario (for NOEC eligibility)
  • Accommodation costs in long-term care (if applicable)

Step 4 — Choose your payment option. If your total OTB entitlement for the benefit year is $360 or less, the CRA will issue it as a single lump-sum payment in July 2026. If it exceeds $360, you receive monthly deposits from July 2026 through June 2027.

Step 5 — Set up or verify direct deposit with the CRA through My Account at canada.ca to ensure payments reach your bank account automatically.

Many Ontarians who could receive OTB payments are not claiming them because they either did not file a tax return or forgot to complete Form ON-BEN. The CRA cannot assess your eligibility without these documents, which means thousands of eligible residents miss out on hundreds of dollars each year.
